Taraji P. Henson Staples Beauty and Skincare Routine

In Bustle’s Beauty Detail, we dive into the beauty kits of our favorite talents for insights into the rituals that keep them glowing and the MVPs (most valuable products) they can’t live without. Here, Taraji P. Henson tells Bustle what inspired her in body care and how she learned to take care of herself at home.

When Taraji P. Henson launched her eponymous scalp care line, TPH, in January 2020, she really wanted to improve the way she took care of herself. “During the lockdown [a few months later], when we couldn’t go anywhere, I couldn’t go to the living room,” the actor told Bustle over Zoom. “So instead of descending into the depression pit, I decided to change the narrative and start taking care of myself.” As someone who admits she “can’t live without” scalp care, getting started in this beauty category made perfect sense for her.

Since then, Henson says she’s become a master of self-care and transforms every aspect of her into something spa-worthy — and that’s what inspired her to expand her line into the skincare space. skin and body. “With Body By TPH, I wanted to deliver that luxurious spa feel at an affordable price,” she says of the brand’s expansion, which is now available in Walmart stores and on the store’s website. . Achieving that “spa feel” is also low-maintenance, as Henson’s favorite practices involve taking seemingly mundane tasks, like taking a shower, and turning them into something meaningful.

Such an example? Turn to the power of perfume. To elevate her home, Henson says she likes to light lots of candles. “I believe in aromatherapy and that bad scents can give you a bad day, while good citrus scents can give you a good start to your day,” she told Bustle. Her favorite scent is that of her Lit In The AM candle, which releases the fresh aroma of tangerine and ginger.

Henson also began transforming her bathroom into a personal “sanctuary” by building a sink-shower and a Japanese tub. “I bought an infrared sauna blanket and started doing 45-minute sessions,” she says. “Then I was doing foot rehabs and learning to do my nails and then that trickled down to pedicures. Now I’ve adapted that and can’t wait for it. I wish I could show you the whole nail table I set up!”

Henson has found herself going to the salon less and less now that she’s become such a pro. “Taking care of myself is now part of my routine,” she says. “And yes, sometimes you want to be pampered by someone else, but there are days when you just don’t want to leave your house but you still want the amenities, right?”

Read on for a look at Henson’s at-home self-care regimen, plus the beauty products she can’t live without.

Her MVP facial cleanser

“I love my Bioré charcoal. I started using the barbell with the pumice stone in it. Or sometimes I just use the pump with the Bioré Charcoal Cleanser. I am a simple girl.

Her all-time favorite moisturizer

“I absolutely must have my Paul Scerri pH Balancing face cream. I’ve been using it for over 20 years. I’ve tried everything and it’s exactly what I need.

Her hair hack

“My favorite beauty hack is my top knot. I use a passion twist hair bundle, put it on the scrunchie and put my hair in a little knot. Then I put that hair with the scrunchie, twist it and I’m throwing a few bobby pins into it. It’s so simple and the tutorials are all over YouTube.”

Her beloved Polish body

“I love the Baby Buff’d scrub because a lot of scrubs for your body leave a heavy, thick oil-like film, and this one is so luxurious.”

Her lip balm can’t live without

“I always have to have my lip balm. I never leave the house without it. I love this one – it comes either in a little jar or in a lipstick tube.

Her must-have skin conditioner

“After [the scrub,] I use the Ish Condish leave-in skin conditioner because I like to layer [products].”

His essential bath

“At night before bed, it’s all about soaking and exfoliating the Double Z. I take a bath and scrub, or take a handful and just throw it in the tub. What I like is is that the formulation turns into these balls of cream in the water, so you try to grab them in. In the tub, I just sit like a big kid – I grab them, let them in on my skin, and rub them in. I can’t wait to take my bath tonight.
