I tried TikTok’s favorite dry shampoo and it’s worth it

The sun was shining, the sky was crystal blue – and it had been exactly a week since the hot water had flowed into my shower head.

My hair was in desperate need of a wash and I was soon to meet some friends on a nearby rooftop. The manager of my building assured me that the hot water would come back “by the end of the day”, but after a few hours of radio silence on his part, things were not improving. At 6:30 p.m. the faucet was now gurgling an alarming brown sludge, my hair still dirty, and my phone was buzzing with a dozen messages from friends texting me, “Come here now!” – I knew it was time to call Redken.

As someone who regularly goes for an extra hour in bed when given the choice between showering or sleeping, I’m no stranger to dry shampoos. Over the past 10 years, I have tried countless formulas to absorb the fat that always seems to build up in my roots within 24 hours of a wash (thanks, Sicilian genes!). Lately I have been loyal to a product that I have declared my personal holy grail. But a Redken night makes me question that loyalty.

The brand Deep Clean Dry Shampoo has been trending for months on TikTok, with the hashtag #redkendryshampoo garnering nearly 60 million views in total. The videos rave about the product’s oil-absorbing properties, so I knew I had to get my hands on a bottle to see what it was about.

It’s easy to use

The bottle instructs you to spray the product from root to tip, rub it into your scalp with your fingers, and then brush it off. So, that’s exactly what I did – and a week of dirt and sweat in the city is completely gone.

Redken also recommends holding the bottle at least 10 inches from your hair. Based on personal experience, this advice should be taken into account. If you get too close, you risk leaving a white residue on your strands. On darker hair colors like mine, they might be mistaken for gray hair or dandruff if you’re not careful.

It gives my hair huge volume

Deep Clean Dry Shampoo has a bit more grain than my regular dry shampoo, and it’s definitely not as light. But if you’re looking to give your hair more body, that’s not necessarily a problem.

Before brushing my hair, I was blown away by the volume. However, after brushing my hair was still beautiful but didn’t have the drama I wanted. So I sprayed some more dry shampoo directly on my roots and let it sit before giving them a good zhuzh. Instantly my dirty several days old turned into something I normally only see after a visit to the salon. I had to use a good chunk of the five ounce can to bring my hair back to life, but the results were undeniable.

If you have bangs like me, this won’t replace the daily wetting, shaping and drying. But for the remaining 90% of your hair, it could become your new hair care.

He saved my night

After a quick shave in the kitchen sink (cold water was still working there), I rushed out the door and reached my friend’s roof just in time. To be honest, I was a little upset when the party didn’t stop for everyone to compliment my fabulous hair the moment I walked in. But when I told a friend that I hadn’t washed my hair in a week, he was blown away by the power of the dry shampoo.

“Does my hair smell bad?” ” I asked. “Be honest.”

“Not at all.” He took a puff. “It’s amazing. Has it really been a week since you washed it?

“Sounds very good.”

While I prefer to have hot water 100% of the time, I won’t be too hard on my superintendent during the next plumbing disaster, especially now that I have a new favorite dry shampoo that can come to my rescue.
